این پروتئین، یک گیرنده هسته‌ای، و یکی از انواع گیرنده‌های رتینوئیک اسید است و نخستین بار، در سرطان کبد (از نوعِ هپاتوسلولار) کشف شد.

اختلال در این ژن همچنین، در ضایعات پیش‌سرطانی سرطان دهانه رحم[6] و نیز در سرطان مهبل ناشی از لیکن اسکلروز مهبل[7] مشاهده شده‌است.
