عملیات وارسیتی

عملیات وارسیتی (۲۴ مارس ۱۹۴۵) عملیات هوابرد موفقیت‌آمیزِ نیروهای آمریکایی، بریتانیایی و کانادایی در اواخر جنگ جهانی دوم بود. در این جنگ بیش از ۱۶۰۰۰ پیاده‌نظام چترباز و هزاران هواپیمای جنگنده درگیر بودند. این عملیات، بزرگترین عملیات هوابردِ تاریخ است که در یک روز و در یک مکان به انجام رسیده است.

  2. Otway claims that Allied intelligence placed 7 Parachute Division and 84 Infantry Division at around 4,000 men each after having suffered heavy casualties in previous campaigns, these being the two German formations facing the Allied airborne forces.[2]
  3. Ellis puts 6th Airborne losses as 1,400 dead, wounded or captured and places the 17th Airborne losses as 1,300 dead, wounded or captured.[1] The official British Parachute Regiment website places 6th Airborne losses at 1,078 killed or wounded.[3]
  4. Over 1,700 aircraft were employed during the airlift of the airborne forces, of which 56 planes were lost. A further 240 planes flew a resupply mission following the glider landings, 16 planes were shot down. Of the 1,300 gliders employed during the operation, under 4% were destroyed.[4]
