برآوردهای جمعیت جهان، برای زمان‌های مختلف در طول تاریخ، سال‌ها مورد مطالعه قرار گرفته‌است. بسیاری منابع از معتبر برای تخمین جمعیت تاریخی، وجود دارند؛ برای مثال (برآورد سرشماری ایالات متحده از جمعیت تاریخی جهان). این مقاله بسیاری از این برآوردها را فهرست کرده‌است. برآوردهای پیش از ۱۰۰۰۰ سال قبل از میلاد فقط از طریق شواهد باستان‌شناسی به دست می‌آیند.

آخرین برهه تاریخی از زمان که جمعیت انسان‌های هوشمند به کمترین حد خطرناک خود رسیده‌است، ۷۰۰۰۰ سال قبل از میلاد در زمان آتشفشان توبا برآورد می‌شود. دانشگاه ایلینوی در اربانا شمپین جمعیت انسان‌ها (هوموساپینس‌ها در آفریقا) در آن زمان را بین ۱۰۰۰ تا ۱۰۰۰۰ زوج تخمین زده‌است.[1][2][3]

جدول زیر از شماره‌گذاری سال نجومی استفاده کرده‌است، اعداد منفی به طور تقریبی به سال قبل از میلاد اشاره می‌کنند (مثلاً ۱۰۰۰۰- = ۱۰۰۰۱ سال قبل از میلاد). جدول، از دوره آخرین حداکثر یخبندان شروع می‌شود، یعنی از زمانی که با عقب‌نشینی یخچال‌ها انسان‌ها در نیم‌کرهٔ شمالی پراکنده شدند.
